Famous people who have shark cage dived in Gansbaai (near Hermanus) -
Great White Shark cage diving has been operating here for over 30 years. This is THE place on the planet to do it, with literally loads of famous people doing it here in recent years – including – Prince Harry, Brad Pitt, King of Jordon, Matt Damon, Katie Melua, Steffi Graff, Sting, Nicholas Cage (apt name), Richard E Grant, Ruby Wax, Colin Jackson, John Lydon, Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jude Law, Monica Seles, Michael Schumacher, Colin Farrell, Christopher Lambett, Maroon 5, One Republic, Justin Timberlake, Cameroon Diaz, Halle Berry filming the movie “Dark Tide” and believe it or not Barbara Windsor (if she can do it – anyone can :-)), David Attenborough and all the worlds film crews and documentary makers – Discovery Channel, BBC, Animal Planet, etc and many more. NO previous diving experience required - There is NO need for scuba or snorkelling experience as it is all surface viewing and novices are very welcome. You pop on a wet suit, pop on a mask and jump into the cage, which is 3 metres high; 2 metres under water and 1 metre above it. When a shark approaches, all you do is hold your breath and duck-down into the lower section of the submerged cage. Resurfacing obviously to get another lung full of air. Each cage holds up to 6 people in one go. You will be at sea for 3 to 5 hours. You get included in the package - a light breakfast of cereal, toast, fruit, yogurts, coffees, teas etc; cold drinks and light snacks on board and then return to land for hot soup and munchies afterwards. Professional DVD cameraman is also on board to capture all the action, including under water footage too. For current prices per person please check our PRICES page - and it is extremely wise for you to book in advance as the boats do get booked up fast all year long. Please be aware that spotting Great White Shark is NOT guaranteed, as nature is nature, plus there are only a tiny number of these incredible creatures left on the planet (less than 1000) because of mankind's greed and destruction of the natural world..... What time are trips - Morning trips usually have a meeting time of 06.00am and go out at about 06.45am and you will be out at sea for 3 to 5 hours – afternoon trips are rare, due to the wind and wave conditions; we will know much closer to the date if afternoon trips will occur. Where and how to get there – boats are at KLEINBAAI (3kms from Gansbaai) The Shark Boat Harbour is about 45 minutes around the bay from Hermanus - at KLEINBAAI (3kms from Gansbaai) Transfers are also available in luxury minibuses, if you wish to be driven down to the boat. These usually cost from R300 per person for a Hermanus return door-to-door journey - OR - if you require a Cape Town return transfer they cost from R500 per person (2 hours 30 mins each way) - (operators prices vary regularly, so we will inform you of exact prices when we chat via email / WhatsApp / cell phone communications) Sea conditions - Visibility, waves, wind and hot sunny conditions are all totally weather dependent – the less wind means less waves and that means less sand and sediment is being washed-about in the sea and creates much better and longer visibility. Best to book on your 1st available day - The very best thing to do is book your Shark Diving trip to occur on the first day you are in Hermanus / Cape Town and if the weather is not so good on that first day, then we simply just move your trip to the next good weather day. We keep a very close eye on the weekly Weather forecast. Many thanks and chat soon to organise your Great White Shark trip. For bookings and loads more info, please click the button below, thank you. Great White Shark cage diving, as a major tourist activity, which is only legally allowed in 1 place on the planet – South Africa, which has been protecting this incredible species for over 30 years. In South Africa there are 3 places to dive – Seal Island off Cape Town, where there are 2 licenses; Mossel Bay where there is 1 license and the major area of Gansbaai / Kleinbaai / Hermanus, where there are 8 licenses, due to the good encounters all year long. Great White Sharks inhabit the coastlines of 85 different countries and other major sighting areas are to be found in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and California. There are over 510 different species of sharks, which also include rays; the normal shark species that we all associate with having dorsal fins being 250 species, of which 100 of these species inhabit South African waters, including Thresher, Ragged Tooth, Hammerhead, Blues, Zambezi and Makos. A Great White Shark’s main food is blubber, which it mainly obtains from seals and dead whales and that is why there are so many Great White Sharks off the coast of Gansbaai, as on Dyer Island there are over 65,000 Cape Fur Seals (the sharks larder) living there. Over the last 10 years, marine scientists have counted over 500 different Great White Sharks at Dyer Island. There are 4 more dangerous species of sharks to mankind than Great White Sharks, they are - Tiger Shark and Bull Sharks as they eat turtles which are crunchy, so are humans; Hammerheads and Makos. A Shark has no skeleton and its endo-skeleton is made out of cartilage. Two thirds of a sharks brain is dedicated to its most powerful sense – smell, hence the use of chum to attract them to the cage diving boats. A few years ago a 3.5 meter Great White Shark female was satellite tagged at Dyer Island nicknamed Nicole, she swam to the western coast of Australia and back again in 99 days, a total distance 22,000 kms. Great White Shark diving is a fabulous experience and they are certainly not the vicious frenzied man killers that the media (wrongly) betrays. Percy Tours deal with all 8 operators, so we will give you a totally impartial and independent view on this incredible activity.
