Nature is a marvelous thing and there really is nothing quite as awe-inspiring and humbling as being allowed to be up close and personal with it.
Hermanus on Walker Bay offers you just that, by allowing you to be literally metres away from the largest of all animals, Southern Right Whales.
These gentle giants of the deep grow to a massive 18 metres long and weight up to 80 tons, so they are really mind-blowingly huge. Add to that, that there are well over 100 whales (mothers nursing new born babies are commonly seen) in Walker Bay at any one time and you are in for the thrill of a lifetime.
The annual whale watching season is between June and December, with the largest number ever being viewed of 172 whales on ONE DAY in October 2006. That’s Whale rush hour to you and me.
To get your adrenaline pumping even further there is one adventure sport that brings you very close to them – Kayaking (which are large versions of canoes).
This activity is a relaxing paddle and therefore people of all ages, with no prior experience, are very welcome to join in this fabulous activity, while your Tour Guide escorts you on the sea.
Not only does your Kayaking trip get you close to Southern Right Whales, but you could also spot our resident Bryde Whales, colonies of inquisitive Cape Fur Seals, African Penguins and many sea birds. Pods of Dolphin occasional patrol this coastline too, so fingers crossed they are within range and want to play.
So strap on a life jacket, grab a paddle and jump into a large colourful Kayak. There is room for 2 of you in a Kayak, so bring a friend too.
The magnificent mountainous landscape backdrop of Hermanus just adds extra beauty to this amazing experience. (Kayaking trips operate all year round and are obviously weather dependant.)
Percy Tours can arrange and book your 2 hour Kayaking trip for you, so please contact us with the date you wish to paddle and how many people are in your group. Price per person is R300.
