HERMANUS TOWNSHIP & RESTAURANT
The Hermanus township of Zwelihle has a new jewel in its crown, with our first and new township restaurant - Siyakhula.
Township tours, B&B’s and ethnic restaurants have started to become increasing popular tourist attractions in big city townships like Cape Town’s Langa, Khayelitsha and Guguletu, and it was only a matter of time before the smaller outlying towns would catch-on fast to this new immerging tourism product.
Started 7 months ago by 33 year old Fundani Nompumza, his restaurant has achieved much high acclaim and media interest, with the local newspaper, the Hermanus Times, starting the buzz and the Cape Town Sunday Times endorsing and praising it with a full page review in its Travel & Food section on 4th February, 2007.
His restaurant is set in 2 thatched rondavels and a lapa, all colourfully painted and beautifully lied out, with modern kitchen facilities behind the dining area.
The menu is ever changing, with many mouth-watered delights. Spicy vegetable soups are for starters, then there could be beef or chicken stew, pap in its many forms, herbs and spices to infuse heat into the dishes. African beans, subtle onion & tomato sauces and crisp salads, with their ingredients having been grown in his vegetable garden, fully compliment as side dishes. Beer called Sorghum or ginger beer, both home-made, are served to wash it all down. Wines are available for those wanting a local Hermanus produced wine from the world famous Hemel-en-Aarde valley wineries.
Siyakhula is attracting a good number of locals to dine there and slowly word of mouth is stirring up quite an interest to taste and dine somewhere different.
The previous Hermanus Whale Crier, Wilson, has just started to do guided township tours, which can take in - Crèches, primary schools, high schools, bars, markets, a doctors surgery, soccer games and the highly-social church gatherings on Sundays, where the singing and bright clothing are out of this world.
Township kids are always highly playful around those with cameras, so be prepared for some very entertaining and amusing photo sessions.
Township B&B’s have started to pop-up, that offer totally authentic township accommodation, complete with highly flamboyant and vibrant owners.
All in all South Africa’s townships are becoming the hip place to visit and hang out, which to be honest not many white or coloured South Africans have ever ventured into – until now. So we all wish these budding new businesses well.
Percy Tours offers guided tours to Zwelihle, so that we can all embrace this cultural experience with open arms, eyes and minds.
