The Hermanus small township of Zwelihle has 35,000 inhabitants.

Township tours, B&B’s and ethnic restaurants have started to become increasingly popular tourist attractions in big city townships like Cape Town’s Langa, Khayelitsha and Guguletu, and it was only a matter of time before the smaller outlying towns, like Hermanus, would catch-on fast to this new emerging tourism product.

A local charity that supplies over 150 meals per day to people in the Township has started to conduct informative Township Tours - while the previous Hermanus Whale Crier and 2 other registered local Tour Guides also offer guided township walking tours, which can take in - Crèches, primary schools, high schools, bars, markets, art and craft designers, doctors surgery, soccer games and possibly the highly-social church gatherings on Sundays, where the singing and bright clothing are out of this world.

Restaurants –

At present the Hermanus township does not have an official township restaurant, but Percy Tours can certainly organise, with your Township Tour Guide, lunch or dinner meals for you (bookings in advance essential). Menus are ever changing, with many mouth-watered delights. From spicy vegetable soups for starters, then there could be beef or chicken stew, pap in its many forms, herbs and spices to infuse heat into the dishes. African beans, subtle onion & tomato sauces and crisp salads, with their ingredients having been grown in local vegetable gardens, fully compliment as side dishes. Beer called Sorghum or ginger beer, both home-made, can be served to wash it all down. Wines are available for those wanting a local Hermanus produced wine from the world famous Hemel-en-Aarde valley wineries, or please bring your own. For those that do not wish to venture into a township, then there are 4 excellent African themed restaurants in Cape Town, with dancers, singers, bands and great ethnic foods.

Township kids are always highly playful around those with cameras, so be prepared for some very entertaining and amusing photo sessions.

Township B&B’s have started to pop-up, that offer totally authentic township accommodation, complete with highly flamboyant and vibrant owners.

All in all South Africa’s townships are becoming the hip place to visit and hang out, which to be honest not many white or coloured South Africans have ever ventured into – until now. So we all wish these budding new businesses well.
